4 Barre Chord Exercises for Beginner Guitar
4 Barre Chord Exercises for Beginner Guitar
Barre chords can be frustrating for any beginner guitarist. Here are 4 guitar exercises to help you overcome your barre chord pain and frustration and help you start playing the songs you love.
In the video we cover:
-
Thumb Action:
- Squeezing the bar chord with the thumb is counterproductive and tiring.
- Instead, transfer the pressure from the thumb to larger muscle groups (shoulder, elbow, forearm).
- Imagine pulling the hand backward towards the body while making the bar chord.
-
Mechanism:
- When not using the thumb, it can be challenging to close all the notes in the chord.
- Practice feeling the pressure points on the guitar neck to achieve even pressure distribution.
- Identify key points of contact for each finger to produce clean notes.
-
Pressure Points:
- Pay attention to the flesh between the second and third knuckle, which is the main point of pressure.
- Use fingertips for the rest of the notes in a major bar chord.
- Develop a sense of how these points feel against the fingerboard to make necessary adjustments.
-
Major and Minor Exercises:
- Practice playing individual notes within the major and minor bar chord shape.
- Start from the bar chord position without using the thumb.
- Focus on troublesome string sets and work on them regularly.

"Hayden is passionate about music and teaching, and it shows! He expertly combines his vast knowledge of theory and his experience as a professional musician to break down mysterious, difficult concepts.
He gives me practical advice on improving, not just as a guitarist, but as a musician on the whole. As a more experienced player, I often have very specific questions, but Hayden hits all my curveballs out of the park! Highly recommend giving him a try."

“Hayden helped me create a bridge between a lot of concepts I knew for years without knowing how to apply them. I learned more about jazz in 5 classes than I did in 15 years of playing. He made learning a tough subject an enjoyable and fun experience no matter what level you’re at.”

"Hayden is an amazing teacher ! He is very knowledgeable and answers every question I have; Hayden`s skill at combining the right amount of theory and practice makes each session enjoyable. He is always prepared with a planned lesson but is also willing to deviate based on my questions or requests. Recently, I injured one of my fingers, Hayden was able to quickly show me some skills I could practice, while that hand healed.
Taking up the guitar as an adult can be daunting, but Hayden has made the process smoother than I anticipated. Both in-person and virtual session have been rewarding !
I would recommend Hayden as a teacher, without hesitation , to beginners and more advanced students alike."
